BitViews

A blockchain application to unchain Open Access. This website is designed primarily for university and research librarians, but anyone interested in widening access to the world's peer-reviewed research is welcome.
The website design is based on HyperSpace (HTML5 UP) and released for free under the Creative Commons.

Please note that, as the BitViews project has not been formally launched yet, some sections in the website are incomplete. A fully updated version of the website will be available on the 15th of November 2019.

What is BitViews?

BitViews is a project aimed at improving the whole mechanism for accessing peer-reviewed research, fulfilling at last the promise of Open Access for all.
BitViews is founded on three original concepts:

An open-source blockchain application that validates, aggregates, and disseminates worldwide data on the online usage of peer-reviewed author's accepted manuscripts (AMs).
Changed incentives: the availability of clean online usage data (location, volume, and timing of views and downloads on a world-wide scale) provides the raw material for assessing the non-citation impact of peer-reviewed research. This, in turn, provides a personal incentive for researchers to deposit their AMs on Open-Access repositories. Why? Because, by definition, open access AMs can be accessed by everybody at no cost, whereas published articles restrict access to the privileged few who can overcome expensive paywalls.
A revolutionary new funding mechanism for libraries, called conditional crowdfunding, whereby the project is activated only if there is sufficient support and individual libraries' contributions fall with the total volume of contributions.

Who owns and manages BitViews?

Please take a moment to examine how BitViews is organized, because, as far as we know, our project is novel and unique, not only technologically and funding-wise, but also in terms of structure and ownership.

Who owns BitViews?

At a fundamental level, BitViews is owned by the community of libraries contributing to its funding. Because of its international dispersed nature, this community is represented by the Supervisory Board (SB), which will be the legal owner of the open-source BitViews blockchain application and the decision-making body of the project. The precise legal structure will be decided by the SB, but most likely BitViews will be a registered charity under Scottish law.

Trust and transparency

BitViews upholds the highest standards of transparency. As explained here, all expenditures will be itemized, recorded, and published on the BitViews website. Similarly, minutes of all meetings of the Supervisory Board (SB) will be published on the website.

BitViews Supervisory Board (SB)

Membership: The SB is chaired by the Librarian of the University of St Andrews, John MacColl. Four other founding members will be chosen from all contributing libraries, on the basis of their commitment to the project and to ensure international balance. The Project Director, Dr Manfredi La Manna is also a founding member. Additional members may be added at the discretion of the SB.

Who manages BitViews?

BitViews Project Director is Manfredi La Manna, who is in charge of the overall project. Consultants for the project are Bram Boskamp and Camillo Lamanna.
